Newspaper Proposal

We (myself and Joe Boorman) are creating a free newspaper for our Media course.
We will do this while studying the key concepts.

Representation
We want to represent the news we select in an interesting way, including positive and negative viewpoints selected from our audience. In this way we can create a well-rounded story while including the viewpoints that are relevant to our readers.
We will also try to research and select stories that are relevant to our audiences' lives and backgrounds and what they will be interested in.

Institution
Through research into the most popular local newspaper in the Bromley area, the News Shopper, we have discovered that they are owned and distributed by Gannett Co., who are an institution that distributes a large amount of news in different formats. In theory, if our newspaper were to be distributed, our newspaper would probably be owned by a larger institution, much like Gannett Co.

Values
I think that we can make this attractive to our target audience by making the layout recognisable as a newspaper- following all the conventions etc. and through doing this we will avoid confusing or patronizing our audience.

Audience
Our target audience is teenagers/young people. This is because we feel there is a gap in the market for a local newspaper aimed at younger people. I feel that we will be able to reach our target audience well as we are young people ourselves.

Language
We are trying to research into conventions for local newspapers. We want to stick to the conventions as much as possible as we feel that it will make the product more recognisable, appealing and easy to read and enjoy.

Ideology
It is hard to pinpoint an ideology for a local newspaper but we can look at the dominant ideology of society, that is to say, to work, pay attention to local issues, help your community, contribute in some way, etc. In a small community town like Bromley, youth organizations try to push this ideology by getting kids to volunteer in youth groups, go to youth clubs, be proactive within the community in issues they care about. So we will try to follow the dominant ideology through our newspaper.

So when writing and designing our newspaper, a lot of research will be required into local and free newspapers. I want to try and stick to the conventions as much as possible as an unconventional newspaper may confuse or make people think they wouldn't want to bother with the newspaper. People pick up newspapers as something to pass the time on transport, while waiting for something, in their breaks at work, and they want to be able to instantly recognise the format and stories inside a newspaper. An unconventional newspaper would detract from this, and mean that the reader would have to familiarise themselves with the layout of the paper, etc.

Genre
The genre of this newspaper is a free local newspaper aimed at young people aged anywhere between 14 - 25.

Proposition

We (myself and Joe Boorman) are creating a free local paper aimed specifically at younger teenagers as there is a gap in the market for this.
We will research local newspapers in the area and work out how we can make ours more attractive to the market. Eventually we will create a front page and an inside spread, while taking photographs, creating ads and using photoshop.

Filming and Editing "The Package"

Yesterday Joe Boorman and I filmed our one minute sequence called "the Package". We took a series of short clips to edit.

We decided on a story last week. The film will show a man carrying a package of some sort and running away from another person. There is a chase and eventually the chaser will catch up with the runner.

After filming, we uploaded the clips onto Final Cut Express and made a rough edit, where we captured the footage from the camera and made a simple timeline. From now on our aim is to clean up the sequence, cut any extra areas, and add transitions and music.
